Certified Veterinary Technicians
A veterinary technician works very closely with your pet’s veterinarian and is an integral part of the veterinary health care team. Not only do they work in the exam rooms, they are the “behind the scenes” people who run all of the blood-chemistry tests, take radiographs (X-Rays), administer medications to hospitalized patients, administer and manage anesthesia, assist in surgery, recover patients after surgery, and perform microscopic studies.
Some compare a veterinary technician to a human nurse. While there are some similarities, a Veterinary Technicians’s job is of a much broader spectrum than that of a human nurse. This is why the term technician is used instead of nurse. They are technically proficient in many areas.
All of our veterinary technicians have received specialized training specific to the field of veterinary medicine. They attended a rigorous two year program that leads to an associate of applied science degree. Other technician degrees can involve up to four years of course work. Following graduation, the student must pass either the state or national boards. Only then do they receive the title of Certified Veterinary Technician, or CVT. In addition, CVT’s, like veterinarians, must maintain their certification by attending continuing education courses on a regular basis.
